Aubrey Johnson is a vocalist and composer whose style is rooted in jazz, Brazilian, and creative contemporary music, with and without words. Since arriving in New York in 2011 she has been performing her original music and arrangements with her sextet, as well as doing considerable work as a side person in the jazz, classical, and new music scenes. Most recently, she toured with John Zorn's vocal ensemble, Mycale and recorded on Andrew Rathbun's big band album ft. Bill Stewart and Luciana Souza. She is currently working on her debut album, which will be released on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Music label. In addition to her extensive performing/recording experience, Aubrey has held faculty positions at the New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, and currently teaches at Queens College and Montclair State University. Aubrey has been called a “formidable vocalist” and “adept improviser” by the Boston Globe and Downbeat magazine describes her voice as "ethereal" and "hauntingly intimate".
