Welcome to the 2017-18 Season of the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra!
I'm delighted to introduce you to our new year of free concerts at the WHCO! We're excited to be back for a third season, and we can't thank you enough for your outstanding support that helped us to embark on the work of building bridges to great, live music accessible to everyone in our community.
We've got great things in store for you this year. Our season opens on Saturday, September 16th when the orchestra will be joined by Grammy-winning soprano Ilana Davidson performing Samuel Barber’s stunningly beautiful Knoxville: Summer of 1915. You'll also hear Ravel’s delightful Le Tombeau de Couperin and Mozart’s extraordinary “Prague” Symphony. The concert is followed by our year’s first reception for Friends of WHCO!
In October we’ll feature acclaimed soloist, New York Philharmonic violinist, and former Washington Heights resident Anna Rabinova in recital playing music by Brahms, Arvo Pärt, and more. In November, the up-and-coming Washington Heights-based Catalyst Quartet presents a fantastic contemporary South American program, followed in December an all-French concert featuring harpist Ashley Jackson and our principal flutist, Anna Urrey.
In January our Young Artist Competition returns in partnership with Florian Leonhard Fine Violins. In February we play an exciting string orchestra concert featuring contemporary works by young composer Jessie Montgomery and Washington Heights neighbor and Pulitzer prize-winning composer, Aaron Jay Kernis! The Winds of WHCO return in March to perform new American music alongside Poulenc and Françaix, and in April we present Ben Capps in recital, our principal cellist. The May orchestra finale opens with Jennifer Higdon’s lightning-speed virtuosic Machine followed by the winner of our Young Artists Competition. We conclude the season with Johannes Brahms’s profound Second Symphony.
We want you to experience great, live music, right here in our neighborhood with old friends and new. We think the foundations of community are strengthened when we share meaningful, beautiful experiences together. Come experience the music with us. Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you soon.
